A 'little fighter' has beaten his life expectancy odds and reached his first birthday.

Riley Brown turned one on Monday, and his family and friends celebrated the milestone on Saturday with a birthday bash.

Doctors told Alexandra couple Ashleigh and Peter Brown their son, who was born with the rare congenital disorder Zellweger syndrome, could die any day when he was born.

'It's been so emotional. I've been crying all day - just to get here after being told he could go any day when he was born.

'Our dream at the start was to get Riley home from hospital, then to get to Mother's Day and Father's Day and to get to Christmas was a massive deal. To get to a year is beyond our expectations, especially when he has been through hell at times.'

Over the past year, she has had to revive Riley about seven times, and the couple survived on about two hours sleep a night. However, it had been a year full of love, hope and happiness. Her son was a 'little fighter' and a 'miracle', she said.

'When you see it start you don't think twice. You automatically start CPR but it takes so long to bring him back. It's not just a few compressions and a few breaths. It almost feels like hours at times and so many things race through your head.'

Doctors had told the couple it was 'time to let him go', but Riley's improved condition after being revived made them feel they were doing the right thing bringing him back, she said.

'To have to revive him this many times yet he comes back better then before just proves we all must be giving him the best life worth living.'

One of the hardest things was never getting down time. Friends and family had shown overwhelming support, but she did not want to leave Riley alone with them for fear of him having a seizure and stop breathing.

'It's difficult. I don't want my friends and family to see when he stops breathing and needs CPR. It is the most horrible thing to see. I don't want anyone else to go through that. It's just too hard to leave him because there is so much Riley needs.'

They started to receive help about two months ago through Hospice, who arranged a night nurse to sit with Riley two nights a week. Two carers also sat with Riley twice a week for two hours a day, and while helpful, they were not trained nurses so she could not go far from his side.

Because Riley was terminal and under 16-years-old, there was no government funding available to assist with his care, she said.

Despite the hard year, the love and joy Riley gave them, and the support from family and friends, had shown them what life was all about, she said.

'He is the biggest cutie. He has such a gentle personality. If he was healthy he would be the cruisiest baby ever. It is just his condition that makes things difficult. He knows how to melt everyone's heart. His eyes say a lot, and he has perfectly timed little yarns to you.'

The pair were more optimistic about Riley's future as he continued to fight for life.

'I think you have to keep being positive. At the start I would have bad days and cry all day and be an emotional wreck and Riley would be the same. As soon as I got it into my head I can't be like that anymore, Riley has been so much better. With everything in life there are always bad things happening but it's how you deal with it - if it is going to be in a positive or negative way.

'People say it is horrible what we are going through, but it's not. Riley has taught us so many things and we are so lucky to to have become parents.'
